Chapter One

Nigel tried to focus on the crossword in the newspaper, enjoying the late afternoon sun while his wife was busy on her tablet. The haunting sound of Lucy’s flute came from the upstairs window.

Karen finally looked up from her screen as their oldest daughter held an impressively long note. “Even I can tell the difference between her old flute and this one.”

“Yeah.” Nigel tilted his head to one side for a few seconds as he listened to her faultless scales. “She’s really good. She’ll sail through her music exam.”

Karen leaned forward. “While we’re alone, there’s something I need to talk to you about.”

“Oh?” Excitement rippled through his body. Over the past few months, their relationship had changed dramatically. He looked through the patio doors to make sure Violet wasn’t sitting in the dining room. “And?”

She laughed at his expression. “I was on the phone to Jenny this morning.”

“Oh. Right.”

She giggled. “Were you hoping for news about somebody else, by any chance?”

He shrugged, but knew it wasn’t convincing. It was already a month since their impromptu threesome with her colleague Sean, and Nigel kept hoping that Sean would return to the UK for another night of passion. “You got my hopes up. I thought you might have been in touch with him.”

“Well unfortunately,” she said, placing the device on the patio table, “apart from an email saying how much he’d enjoyed meeting us both in London, I’ve not heard from him. And I still don’t know what I’ll be working on when our project ends in a couple of weeks.”

“Right.” He sighed. “So, Jenny?”

“Yes, she made a suggestion I think you’ll like.”

“Oh?”

“They’ve rented a house in Cornwall for a couple of weeks and suggested a holiday so the girls could spend time with Izzy.”

Nigel tried to keep his face neutral. “Right.” Izzy was sweet and Jenny great, but her husband…

Karen laughed. “Stop looking so worried. I wouldn’t put you through the torture of a fortnight with Stuart.”

Nigel let out a sigh of relief. “It’s not that—”

“Yes it is. We both know he’s a twat, but Jenny loves him. I’m happy for her to spend her life with him, but there’s no way I’d expect you to spend a holiday with him. And neither would Jenny. She asked if she can take the girls away with them.”

Nigel stared open-mouthed.

“I thought I’d ask you before I mentioned it to Lucy and Vi, but I’m sure they’d love it.” She looked at him. “What do you think?”

“I’m sure they’d love it, too. They’re going—no discussion. Any chance of them staying there for a couple of months? I could see if my hair turns back to its original colour.”

She giggled. “You don’t mean that.”

“No, you’re right. When is it?”

“About three weeks’ time. They’ll have finished school for the summer, hockey season will be over, and Lucy will have taken her grade five.”

He nodded. “It’s fine with me.”

She leaned forward and spoke in a more intimate whisper. “And I thought that maybe we could go away at the same time.
